The legendary Japanese animators of Studio Ghibli on Monday became the first group to receive an honorary Golden Palm branch at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Oscar-winning studio, founded 40 years ago, is loved all over the world thanks to such masterpieces as "My Neighbor Totoro", "Carried Away by Ghosts" and "Howl's Moving Castle".

Co-founder of Ghibli Hayao Miyazaki, 83 years old, was not present at the French festival, but his son Goro Miyazaki received the award.

"I would like to thank all the fans around the world," he said on stage after receiving this award, before those present saw four short films from this incredible creative team: "May and the bus with a kitten" (a mini-sequel to the film "My Neighbor Totoro"), "Mister Testo and Egg Princess", "Hunting for Home" and "Gusenitsa Boro". Everyone was met with good-natured laughter.

"Today you supported studio Ghibli for the next 40 years," said Goro Miyazaki after the show.
